Scholar-in-Residence - Doron Sheffer

February 23-25, 2018

Doron Sheffer first gained fame as a young upstart in the Israel Basketball Premier League, leading the underdog Hapoel Galil Elyon team to a victory over the tournament favorites Maccabi Tel Aviv in the League Semi-finals.  He next moved to the U.S., planning for NCAA powerhouse UConn where he became the only player to record 1,000 points and 500 assists in each season. Sheffer was set to be the first Israel player in the NBA after being selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Clippers, but declined to return to Israel and play for Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he won four consecutive League championships.

His life then changed dramatically when he stepped away from the hoops scene, traveled, won a successful battle against cancer, and then returned to the court.  During the journey, he became observant and today runs a health center which he founded.  During his time in Omaha, he will share his life story and his love of Torah.  Doron will speak on Friday evening following Shabbat dinner and Saturday morning after kiddush lunch.
On Sunday morning the 25th Sheffer will lead a youth basketball clinic for ages 13-18 from 10:30am-12pm at Burke High School.  Prior registration required.

Call the synagogue office at 402-556-6288 with any questions.
